Collage art exhibition Loire Valley: from 12 May to 27 June 2026, Domaine de Rocheville in Parnay (Maine-et-Loire) hosts a selling exhibition of original collages by Collage artist Beatty — whose full name is Béatrice Mortier — a collage artist based in Montreuil-Bellay. Over thirty richly coloured works fill the tasting and exhibition room, right in the heart of the Loire Valley.

A late calling, a singular technique

Beatty’s story is the kind you hesitate to tell for fear it sounds too good to be true — and you can feel it in every piece she makes.

After years of training with professional artists in dry pastel, perspective drawing and oil painting, she finally found her voice at the very moment most people set down their tools. It was at retirement that she turned to collage, entirely self-taught, and never looked back.

Her raw material? Everyday papers that most people would discard without a second thought: napkins, tissue paper, newspapers, magazines, gold leaf. In her hands, these castoffs are transformed. She cuts, tears, layers and juxtaposes them — giving them, as she puts it, “another life”.

Collage as illusion: the closer you look, the more you see

From a distance, Beatty’s work is pleasantly disorienting: you could swear you’re looking at a carefully painted canvas. Then you step closer, and the mechanics reveal themselves. What seemed like a brushstroke is in fact a scrap of paper placed to the millimetre.

That velvety blended effect? Tissue paper layered and pressed with a fingertip. The vibrant mosaic feel in her urban scenes — Imaginary City (80 × 60 cm) or Agora (30 × 20 cm)? Simply small squares of paper placed side by side, nothing more.

In her figurative works — the characters in Les Chochottes, Fashion Girls, or the rakish faces of Les Lascars — only the faces and arms are painted in acrylic. Everything else is pure collage.

Three series, one spirit

Beatty’s world is organised around three distinct series, each alive with the same human warmth.

Her signature series, Les Copines (“The Girlfriends”), always appears in trios — catching women around a table, sharing a coffee, a tea or a glass of wine after a shopping trip. Small everyday moments of togetherness, fixed on canvas in coloured paper. Their male counterparts, Les Mirontons, are comical and eccentric: series of five faces in which you might recognise someone you’ve met, or someone close to you. They go by names like Les Lascars, Les Lurons, Les Sacripans. The Tags series, meanwhile, plunges the eye into the frenzy of the great metropolises, capturing urban energy through an accumulation of paper fragments.

The exhibition also features still lifes and landscapes — sun-drenched grapes in Les Raisins Bleus, Provençal architecture in Les Balcons de Provence, an aerial view of an azure swimming pool in Pause Piscine. Quite an imagination.

Proust’s madeleines, ready to hang

What makes Beatty’s work so compelling is not only technique — it’s her ability to trigger immediate recognition. You find yourself in a scene, you spot a familiar gesture, a memory surfaces, and you smile. Her paintings work like visual Proustian madeleines: they don’t tell a story so much as awaken one already inside you.

Art in the glass and on the walls

Coming to see Beatty’s collages is also the perfect opportunity to discover — or rediscover — the wines of Domaine de Rocheville.

Perched on the hillside at Parnay, at the heart of the Saumur-Champigny appellation, the estate has been producing four certified organic AOPs since 2004: a fine-bubbled Crémant de Loire La Favorite Domaine de Rocheville, perfect as an aperitif; Saumur Blanc from the chenin grape — the emblematic white variety of the Loire Valley, with aromas of white fruit and citrus, combining freshness and elegance; a dry, subtle Saumur Rosé; and Saumur Champigny, a red wine from the cabernet franc grape, whose notes of red and dark fruit are lifted by the characteristic freshness of Parnay’s tuffeau limestone.

For over ten years, Domaine de Rocheville has made art one of its defining threads, opening its doors to artists working across a wide range of styles and disciplines — photography, painting, drawing, collage. All techniques are welcome, each taking turns to light up the exhibition room overlooking the Parnay valley.

Wine tasting on site, guided tours of the eco-friendly winery, walks through the vines: the estate is as worth visiting as it is worth drinking. A fine way to leave with eyes full of colour and a satisfied palate — painting under one arm, bottle in the bag.
